A day in the life of a tow truck driver

Ten Steps to Towing Greatness

3/18/2018

Show up, load up, drop off...

Sounds simple being a tow truck driver, doesn't it? If it only it were that easy. Hauling vehicles entails much more than those three basics.

This post is for you if you're at all interesting in running a towing company.

Here are what we call our ten steps to towing greatness:

  1. Be friendly and care. People like to buy from someone the like. Usually, as long as they genuinely like you, they are more than happy to pay you for your service. Here's a hint... If you smile, look sharp, and show that you truly care about their situation, chances are good that they will like you, and buy from you.
  2. Be considerate to the rush they are likely in. Let your conversation on the phone show them that you're trying to be as quick as possible for them. They are probably late for work. Quote them quickly, and try to get a laugh out of them. If they're the type of person that likes to ring every company in town, they'll remember your joke, and call you back first.
  3. Show up on time, every time. #1 rule in the towing business-- do your absolute best to arrive when you said you would. If you're late, call them. Let them know. Time is essential in this business.
  4. Ensure that the area is safe and that markers are used to warn the traffic passing by. Upon arrival, you should always place hazard markers for those driving by on the freeway or city streets, so that you can greatly reduce the risk of anyone wrecking into your tow truck.
  5. Be friendly and enjoyable. Smile, when you first meet. You'd think that something so simple wouldn't need it's own "step" and explanation. But in today's fast-paced world, a big smile is essential to easing the customer's tension.
  6. Load the vehicle safely and efficiently. Always use standard techniques to load the car onto your flatbed, and secure it down. If you don't normally, build a habit of double and triple checking your work, as you go. You can't be too cautious when it comes to handling other people's valuable property.
  7. Make the trip over fun, if the customer is riding with you. Sometimes, the customer will need to ride with you from pick up to drop off. Keeping cool beverages or snacks on board can set you apart and help your new customer to appreciate the lengths you go to for their satisfaction.
  8. Unload their automobile safely. Complete the job the right way, and take your time unloading their vehicle from your roll-back truck. This is the last step in the process to ensure that you get paid, and the company makes a profit on this time spent.
  9. Give the customer a compliment. Letting your new customer know that you admire something in them is a surefire way to be remembered by them next time they need a tow. Tell them how you noticed how patient they kept themselves throughout the process, or that you really like their car.
  10. Thank them for everything and mention leaving a review. Always do your best to leave things on a great note. Your online reputation is of extreme importance today, and for the foreseeable future. Take your time to leave a lasting impression, and ask them to review you, since your business is important to you.
Our mission is to care about each and every customer we gain, and keep operating the best towing service in Scottsdale. So far, it's served us very well and helped to facilitate the continued growth of our business.
